The Admissions Process
High Tech High schools endeavor to accommodate all students who apply for admission; however, because applications for admission exceed the number of spaces available, HTH uses a computerized lottery to determine admission. Spaces are allocated to form a student body that reflects the demographics of the region in which the school is located.
Interested applicants must do the following to apply:
-
Complete an application for admission between December 1st and February 28th in order to be entered into the lottery for admission to an HTH school. Once you apply, you will receive an email confirmation that your application has been received. Please save this confirmation and note the application number for later reference. If you DO NOT receive an email confirmation, please contact the admissions office as there was likely an error entering your application.
-
All middle and high school applicants and their parents must attend ONE mandatory admissions informational meeting (a link to the dates can be found on the left side of this page). ONLY PARENTS of High Tech Elementary applicants are required to attend an informational meeting. There is no need to RSVP for these meetings.
-
Submit required proof of eligibility for the National School Lunch Program (free/reduced lunch approval letter from your school district) ONLY if applicable. Proof can be emailed to admissions@hightechhigh.org OR faxed to 619-243-5050 Attn: Admissions and must be received before the application deadline in order to be eligible for the statistical advantage in the lottery. Please do one or the other, but please do not send via mail and email and fax. Please DO NOT contact us to confirm receipt of your paperwork. We will contact you if we have not received it. If you do not get a call from us, it means we have received the necessary paperwork from you.
Anyone who is not admitted after the lottery will automatically be entered into the waiting pool. Applicants in the waiting pool will be considered on a rolling basis as spaces become available. If an applicant is not admitted for the academic year they applied for, they will be required to resubmit a new application in order to be considered for the following year.
Due to the thousands of applications we receive, High Tech High does not have the capacity to bring applicants into a room to observe the lottery process. A screen capture of the HTH admissions lottery will be available on this website once it has concluded.
2012-2013 Admissions
The online application for the 2012-2013 school year will be available starting December 1, 2011. Paper applications can be requested from the admissions office and will also be available at all HTH schools. We do not provide individual tours, but Informational Meetings (open houses) will be held in January and February. Those dates will appear on our website starting November 1, 2011. The deadline to apply is February 28th, 2012. The lottery will be held in mid-March 2012. All applicants and families will be notified via our website and US mail in late-March whether they have been admitted to one of our schools or they have been added to the waiting pool.
Important Dates
Informational Meeting Dates are in January and February and can be found here.
Applications Deadline: February 28, 2012
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Waiting Pool
Students who apply and are not admitted are automatically placed in the waiting pool.
The waiting pool is not a sequential list and students are admitted in a manner similar to the lottery, based on zip-code. Spots are filled on a rolling basis whenever a space opens up at one of our schools. We contact the family using the phone number listed on the application if a spot opens up in your zip code and you are randomly selected. Please do not contact the Admissions Office to inquire about the status of a student in the waiting pool. We will contact you if your child is selected. We appreciate your patience and understanding.
Kindergarten Applicants
A child must be 5 years old before November 1, 2012 to be eligible to apply. We do not make exceptions to this rule.
Conditional Lottery and Acceptance for Transitional Kindergarten-age ApplicantsUnder current law, children accepted in the 2012-2013 lottery who turn five years old between November 2, 2012 and December 2, 2012 would be served as Transitional Kindergarteners at HTe. A transitional kindergarten is the first year of a new two-year kindergarten program. Pursuant to law, (EC 48000[c]), a child is eligible for transitional kindergarten if a child will have his or her fifth birthday between November 2, 2012 and December 2, 2012.
While we do not expect any change in the legislation, there are still unresolved state budget issues. Consequently, the application and acceptance of any Transitional Kindergarteners is considered conditional, and will remain so until the HTH organization can confirm that the state will provide funding for the program. If the Transitional Kindergarten program is suspended or delayed, children turning five between November 2 and December 2, 2012 will not be eligible for admission until the 2013-14 school year and will need to reapply in December of 2012.
