The Admissions Process
High Tech High schools endeavor to accommodate all students who apply for admission; however, because applications for admission exceed the number of spaces available, HTH uses a computerized lottery to determine admission. Spaces are allocated to form a student body that reflects the demographics of the region in which the school is located.

Interested applicants must do the following to apply:
Complete an online application for admission between November 1st and February 28th in order to be entered into the lottery for admission to an HTH school. Once you apply, you will be directed to a confirmation page where you will see a record of what was submitted, please print that page for your records. You will also receive an email confirmation. Please save this confirmation. If you do not receive an email confirmation, please check your SPAM folder. If you do not find the confirmation email there, but you were directed to the confirmation page, the application probably went through, but please log back into your account and check "My Applications" to confirm. Otherwise contact the admissions office for assistance. If you prefer to use a paper application, please visit one of our schools to pick one up. 2. Information Sessions/Open Houses
Middle and High School- Applicants AND at least one parent must attend a mandatory admissions informational meeting per school (a link to the dates can be found on the left side of this page). There is no need to RSVP for these meetings. If your child is accepted for the coming school year, you and your child(ren) will be invited to a special tour/orientation for new parents and children before the beginning of the new school year, typically in early June.
Elementary School- PARENTS ONLY must attend ONE mandatory admissions informational meeting. There is no need to RSVP for these meetings. 3. Submit required proof of eligibility for the National School Lunch Program
If you indicated that you qualified on your application, please send the free/reduced lunch approval letter from your school district (ONLY if applicable). Proof can be emailed to email@example.com OR faxed to 619-243-5045 Attn: Admissions and must be received before the application deadline in order to be eligible for the statistical advantage in the lottery. Do one or the other, but please do not send via mail and email and fax. Please DO NOT contact us to confirm receipt of your paperwork. If you submit it via email, you will receive a confirmation email.
The best years to apply to an HTH school are grades Kindergarten, 6th and 9th. All other grades are non-transitional years, which means that there will be VERY LIMITED SPACES (if any) available. We will not know how many spaces we will have available until late in the school year or even the fall, but if there are any spaces available please keep in mind that there will be extremely few openings. We will not send notification to families who are not selected because of the extremely few openings we will have. If your child is selected, we will let you know via phone and you will have 24 hours to get back to us.
Visiting the Admissions Office
If you need to see an Admissions Office representative, please call (619) 796-4484 or email firstname.lastname@example.org to make an appointment. If you want to submit school documents, please upload them to your School Mint account or take them directly to the school to which you were accepted.
Unfortunately, the Admissions Office cannot meet and discuss applicants who are in the waiting pool. If you have a child in the waiting pool, please know that you will be contacted if your child is selected.
Students who apply and are not admitted are automatically placed in the waiting pool.
The waiting pool is not a sequential list and students are admitted in a manner similar to the lottery, based on zip-code. Spots are filled on a rolling basis whenever a space opens up at one of our schools. We contact the family using the phone number listed on the application if a spot opens up in your zip code and you are randomly selected. Please do not contact the Admissions Office to inquire about the status of a student in the waiting pool. We will contact you if your child is selected. We appreciate your patience and understanding.
A child must turn 5 years old on or before September 1st for the 2016-17 school year and each school year thereafter. (EC Section 48000[a]). We do not make exceptions to this rule.
Siblings of students who are currently enrolled do not have a guaranteed admission, but they are given a preference. This preference is based on zip code. Sibling applicants are given a preference when applying to a school in the same village as their sibling. There is no sibling preference for two siblings who apply at the same time or from one village to the other. This preference only applies to siblings, not relatives.
Because charter schools have the option to participate in Transitional Kindergarten, High Tech High schools and Explorer Elementary have chosen not to participate in the Transitional Kindergarten program and will only accept those Kindergarten applicants who are 5 years old on or before September 1st. No exceptions will be made.
