In 2005, Colleen moved to San Diego just to work at High Tech High. She'd been living up in the central Sierra Nevada mountains, and although she loved being close to the forest and the rocks, she was searching for a teaching position in a non-traditional school that would allow her to express her creativity as a teacher.
Colleen spent most of her childhood in Rhode Island. From there she attended Boston College to earn a BA in psychology. But It wasn’t until the summer after graduation when she went on a NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School) course and spent a month backpacking and climbing in Wyoming that Colleen realized her path--to help others find their connection and curiosity for the natural world.
Since then Colleen has earned a masters degree in environmental science/education from Prescott College and lived, learned and worked in various locations (Texas, Arizona, Mexico, England/Schumacher College, Santa Barbara, Calaveras County…..). She's led backpacking trips for teens, started her own catering company, worked on organic farms, waited tables, practiced and taught yoga, taught at nature centers, science camps and in class rooms and…. FINALLY, decided to get a job with health insurance and a stable salary.
Colleen believes that education should be inquiry and project-based while rooted in rigorous content that is meaningful to students’ lives. She is an advocate of interdisciplinary education because the ‘real world’ is not divided into disciplines—rather it is a beautiful mess of complexity and interrelationships.
Colleen loves learning new things, yoga, cooking, gardening, reading, writing, mountain biking, rock climbing….and relaxing. She lives with her husband Jason, baby Finn and dog, Odin (who’s been her companion for 13 1/2 years).

I was raised in Linden, New Jersey and Westford, Massachusetts. I come from a large Polish family and loved living in an area that represented so many different cultures, but especially those of eastern European descent. I especially loved being close to my grandmothers and learning the art of making polish traditional foods like pierogi. Although sad to leave New Jersey, moving to Westford, Massachusetts was probably one of the best decisions my parents made for me. The schools I attended and the area I lived in fostered the idea of attending college, and I am proud to say that I am the first person in my family to not only receive a bachelor\\\'s degree but also a master’s degree.
I attended several colleges, including Biola University in La Mirada, but ultimately graduated from Gordon College, a small private college outside of Boston, with a degree in Spanish and Business. The highlight of my undergraduate career was studying in Seville, Spain for one semester and then in Salamanca, Spain for the summer. I fell in love with Spain, their people and with travel in general while there.
Shortly after graduating I moved to San Diego on my own and fell in love with my next favorite place. I love San Diego\\\'s beauty, and it’s laid back attitude. I was home. I started out my career using my Spanish language skills in business while being a loan officer for underserved areas. My goal however was always to return to school and I returned to earn my masters degree from Middlebury College. Middlebury was intense time of growth in the language and focus on literature.
Having taken teaching courses at Middlebury and having had the experience to teach English as a second language while studying in Spain, I had the desire to focus on teaching upon returning. I have since been a bilingual elementary school teacher and a Spanish teacher with my most recent high school experience being at Steele Canyon Charter High School.
My passions outside of the classroom are to be with and play with my children, cooking, travel, and volunteering in community groups. I also have a huge soft spot for animals.
I am excited to be at High Tech High International and witness the mutual respect between students, teachers and administration!
