Shayna Cribbs is a founding teacher of Explorer Elementary Charter School and currently teaches 3rd grade. Shayna received her credential in elementary education at UC San Diego, where she also completed her undergraduate degree.

Niki Even is the Coordinator of Programming for Outside the Lens. Niki graduated from the University of San Diego with a B.A. in psychology and earned her M.Ed. and teaching credentials from Azusa Pacific University. To learn more about Outside the Lens visit

John Fisher teaches 10th grade Humanities at High Tech High Chula Vista. He holds a B.A. in Philosophy from UC Santa Cruz and an M.A. in Composition and Reading from San Francisco State. John is currently pursuing his teaching credential in the HTH credential program.

Lori Fisher teaches 10th grade Humanities at High Tech High Media Arts. She earned a B.A. in Peace and Conflict Studies from UC Berkeley and a M.Ed. from Stanford. Prior to teaching, she was a State Coalition Organizer for YouthBuild USA.

Angela Guerrero teaches 10th grade Humanities at High Tech High Chula Vista. She is pursuing her M.Ed. in the HTH GSE Teacher Leadership program, where she is investigating role-playing and simulations in the classroom. Angela received a B.A. in English from San Diego State University.

Cindy Jenson-Elliot is the Garden Coordinator at Explorer Elementary Charter School. She holds a B.A. in history from Bowdoin College and an M.A. in Education from San Diego State University in Curriculum and Instruction, emphasizing environmental science. She is a freelance educational writer and an instructor at the San Diego Natural History Museum.

Mingya Mansfield teaches Mandarin at High Tech High International. Originally from China, she studied English at the San Diego State University Language Institute, and later earned a B.A. in Environmental Design from SDSU. Mingya is currently pursuing her teaching credential in the HTH credential program.

Brooke Newman teaches 3rd grade at Explorer Elementary Charter School. She holds a B.A. and a multiple subject teaching credential from UC San Diego. In 2002, Brooke returned to UCSD to earn her M.A. with a focus on the areas of social curriculum and service learning.

Gary Orfield co-founded and directed the Harvard Civil Rights Project. He is currently Professor in the UCLA Graduate School of Education and Co-director of the Civil Rights Project at UCLA. Orfield is well-known for his work related to education policy, urban social policy, and minority opportunity in American society. Recent works include the co-edited books Dropouts in America: Confronting the Graduation Rate Crisis; School Resegregation: Must the South Turn Back?; and Higher Education and the Color Line; as well as numerous articles and reports. In addition to his scholarly work, Orfield has helped develop governmental policy and served as an expert witness in multiple court cases related to civil rights. In 2007, the American Educational Research Association honored him with the Social Justice in Education Award for “work that has had a profound impact on demonstrating the critical role of education research in supporting social justice.”

Heather Riley teaches 7th grade humanities at High Tech Middle. She is pursuing her M.Ed. in the HTH GSE Teacher Leadership program. Heather earned a B.A. in English and her teaching credential from Mesa State College in Grand Junction, Colorado.

Juli Ruff teaches 9th grade humanities at High Tech High. She is pursuing her M.Ed. in the HTH GSE Teacher Leadership program, where she is investigating how to effectively facilitate student critique. Juli received her B.A. in English and art from Saint Mary’s College and her teaching credentials in English, art and social studies from Lewis-Clark State College.

Wendie Ward teaches 7th grade language arts, history and theater at Lakeside Middle School in Lakeside, California. She is pursuing her M.Ed. in the HTH GSE Teacher Leadership program, where she is investigating differentiation and project-based learning. Wendie earned a B.A. in Liberal Studies from San Diego State University.

Karl Wendt teaches 12th grade Engineering at High Tech High Media Arts. He holds a B.S. in Industrial Design from Auburn University and a M.Ed. from Vanderbilt University. Prior to teaching, Karl worked as an industrial designer and product design consultant.
