Have you ever used a curb cut in the sidewalk? Maybe for your shopping cart, maybe for your child’s stroller- This design feature was originally created specifically for people who use wheelchairs to get around, however, it supports many of us in our daily lives. UDL is all about intentionally designing “curb cuts” in the classroom to support all learners. Key: changing the environment, not the learner. In fact, this may actually be something that you are already doing in the classroom! Let’s workshop a lesson/project so that it involves these key instructional practices and removes barriers for students. Ideal for Ed Specialists and General Education Teaching teams.
Not yet convinced this is for you? Here is the Textbook Definition: UDL is an approach to curriculum design that can help teachers customize curriculum to serve all learners, regardless of ability, disability, age, gender, or cultural and linguistic background. UDL provides a blueprint for designing strategies, materials, assessments, and tools to reach and teach students with diverse needs. Curious about what it looks like? Reading Rockets: Universal Design for Learning: Meeting the Needs of All Students
