Students from kindergarten through fifth grade practiced and memorized dance routines that celebrated the diverse cultures from the African Diaspora, especially the cultures of Trindad and Tobago. A performance for family and school community occurred on the school field and culminated in a very dramatic release of colored chalk and student exuberance for a beautiful performance.
During the project, our overarching goal was to build a strong sense of community and explore the joy of dance. Understanding how other cultures other than your own can celebrate and experience joy was also an emphasis during the trimester together. We wanted to respect the impact that dances from the African Diaspora have on each other and the world. Our real world connection was to get a glimpse into what working in the Dance Industry is like, especially focusing on the passion and discipline that is demanded by the industry.
The visual and end product really showed through the students. They were all actively participating and showing that they were really enjoying what they were doing after months of hard work/ learning that was put into the project and have a new appreciation and respect for the art form.
