Our project launched when students met Changemakers from the San Diego community who shared the community challenge that they are passionate about, how they disrupt these challenges and how we can help create change as community members. Throughout the project students met 15 different changemakers from our community. We took action with several of our experts like planting native plants in our garden, putting together hygiene kits and snack packs for community members in need. Field experiences included visiting People Assisting The Homeless (PATH) in downtown San Diego as well as Kumeyaay First Nation Park in Old Town. Students selected a community challenge they were passionate about to research and take action. To educate our community students created Infographic Posters on Canva and wrote persuasive letters to encourage businesses around the community to put up their posters. Our changemaker topics included:
Research Notes Catcher: Students researched a given Community Challenge and collected important facts on a note catcher Infographics: Students created an infographic on Canva to educate their community about the Community Challenge, possible solutions and actions to disrupt the challenge, and local changemakers doing this work
Actions: For each Community Challenge students participated in an Action to address the challenge.
Actions included: Making seed balls to support Native Plants and Pollinators Learning about and Honoring the Kumeyaay Nation through playing and teaching Peshook, a Kumeyaay game that facilitates learning numbers in Kumeyaay, and learning about traditional uses of Native Plants
Informational & Persuasive Letter: Students wrote a letter to a local business to inform about the Community Challenge and possible Solutions, and to convince the business to display their Infographic to educate the larger community.
Rise Up! A Changemaker project was such a powerful, and joyful project. It was great to see students connecting with changemakers from our community to learn how they can take action to support community members in need. Students were so excited to choose a topic to research, take action together and create infographics. We had a great time educating community members and empowering them to take action!
