Eleventh graders at HTHNC partnered with nonprofit organizations to support various causes in our local community. All students researched issues impacting our community and developed a project to serve the needs of their partner organziation. This project encouraged students to make a positive impact in our community while developing their communication, collaboration, and research skills.
When we examine our world today, we are often overwhelmed by negativity that permeates the media. It makes one wonder whether anything positive is happening in our world or if we have the power to make a difference. Hope is the feeling that what is desired can be achieved or that events will turn out for the best, but we do not often encounter these messages of hope in our society. Human beings collectively have the power to impact our world and bring about positive change. During this project 11th graders have the opportunity to investigate an issue that they care about in our community and take action to make a positive difference.
As part of our studies, we will study contemporary and historical “changemakers.” Throughout history individuals have prompted change by speaking up and taking action. This fight continues today and in our own community as individuals in San Diego and our world devote their lives to civic action. This project gives students the opportunity to find these local heroes who are fighting for something greater than themselves in the hopes that it will inspire you to do the same. As the admirable Robert F. Kennedy once said, “Few will have the greatness to bend history itself, but each of us can work to change a small portion of events. It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped. Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.”
“It was a great way to get us to working with the community and served as a good stepping stone for internships.”
“I loved being able to meet, connect with, and help local organizations because it emphasized the importance of community service and the impact that it can have on society.”
