Advanced Pedagogy for Single Subject Added Authorization
Added Authorization allows a CA credentialed general education teacher to add an additional general education teaching credential without completing the full professional preparation program for that credential. We offer Advanced Pedagogy courses each fall as a 12-week session starting in late September and running through December. These courses are fully online and will meet on Tuesday evenings 4:45 to 7:45.Â
The content-specific pedagogy courses we offer are open to any teacher that holds a CA teaching credential in Single or Multiple Subjects. These courses provide teachers with instruction and practice for planning and delivering curriculum in these subject-specific content areas. These courses meet the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing requirement to add a content/authorization area to an existing CA credential.

The units offered through the Teacher Center curriculum are CEU’s which lead to teacher licensure where one CEU equals ten contact hours of participation. As such, the HTH Teacher Center does not qualify for Federal Student Aid, cannot be used to defer student loan payments, and is not tax deductible.Â
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is CSET a requirement? Â
A: An Added Authorization does require demonstration of content area subject-matter competence with completion of CSET being the most common method (subject matter degree match and or subject matter evaluation are also possible). Subject-matter competence does not need to be completed prior to this course; however, completion of the advanced pedagogy course in conjunction with demonstration of content area subject-matter competence is needed to apply to the CTC for an added authorization.
Q: How do I get my new subject area added to my current credential once I complete all of the added authorization requirements?
A: Applications for added teaching or content areas may be submitted to the Commission by mail including the following items:
- Completed online application (see Direct Application Submission).
- Supporting documentation, such as official transcripts, copies of test scores, out-of-state credential, National Board certificate, as applicable.
- Application processing fee.
