Over the past year the Authentic Student-Led Assessment Improvement Group has been working to test various change ideas in an attempt to dig deeper into our topic to gain a better understanding of how to address the problems that come along with assessing students. We began by generating a problem statement: Students aren’t involved frequently enough in design and execution of assessment, which leads to a lack of intrinsic motivation and understanding. Many of the PDSA cycles that were tried included attempts at involving students in creating their own rubrics, assessing themselves and defining their grades. Our work with student-led assessment is not done, but we hope that you will find some wonderful ideas to modify some of your current practices to attend to assessment in our change package that follows.
