Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers are vital for the economic growth of the United States. Unfortunately, many of our students tend to shy/fear these subjects. Mindset is one of the leading factors that determines how successful a student is in STEM courses. Our journey was to investigate the following question, “Why do our students not have a growth mindset within STEM subjects?” We have discovered that our language and instructional practices do not promote it and improvement must be done.  In our fishbone diagram, we came to realize that there are a lot of barriers in this process including genius myth, lack of relevance, fear of failure and low self-esteem. Our goals were to improve the culture in STEM classrooms through routines and structures that honor all student voices.
