How does knowing and understanding how we feel help us to know ourselves and relate to those around us better? How do we understand that we have the power and control over our own emotions? Through the exploration of Social Emotional Learning, First Graders will learn to identify their feelings and which emotions they are grappling with. Students will design and create a stuffy monster that can be used as a tool to help them navigate their emotions. They will create multiple drafts and a prototype before selecting final geometric shapes, colors and details. With their peers, students will critique and revise their stuffy monster so that it supports their unique emotions.
This project was of high interest to the students. They enjoyed learning about the emotions and the strategies and tools they could use when they navigate the various emotions. Students especially enjoyed designing and creating their stuffy. They were also able to practice their writing skills when creating a personalized tag that accompanied their monster.
