State recognition highlights exemplary student outcomes and innovative learning across the High Tech High network

SAN DIEGO, CA — Three schools in the High Tech High network — HTH International, HTH Mesa, and High Tech Middle North County — have been named 2026 California Distinguished Schools, one of the state’s highest honors for public schools.

The designation recognizes schools demonstrating exceptional student performance and success in closing achievement gaps, as identified by the California Department of Education. The recognition was announced by State Superintendent Tony Thurmond, who commended schools across the state for their commitment to improving student outcomes.

“Being named a California Distinguished School reflects the deep commitment of our educators, students, and families to meaningful learning and student success,” said Dr. Diana Cornejo-Sanchez, CEO of High Tech High. “At High Tech High, we believe that when students engage in relevant, hands-on learning experiences, they develop the skills, confidence, and purpose needed to thrive in college, career, and life.”

Established in 1985, the California Distinguished Schools Program celebrates schools that demonstrate innovation, academic excellence, and a strong commitment to ensuring that all students have the opportunity to succeed.

High Tech High schools are widely recognized for their project-based learning model, where students engage in interdisciplinary projects, collaborate with peers, and present their work publicly. This approach encourages deeper learning while helping students develop critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving skills that prepare them for college and future careers.
