Named in honor of Larry Rosenstock, the co-founder of our charter school network, the HTH Founders Scholarship is designed to encourage academic achievement and higher education. The Founder’s Scholarship Fund awards two college scholarships yearly to graduating seniors at each of the six HTH high schools.
Awarded through the High Tech High Foundation, the HTH Founders Scholarship is more than just a financial award; it celebrates our students’ hard work and contributions to their communities. Each year, two students from each of our six HTH high schools are selected as recipients based on their exceptional academic achievements and involvement in their communities. These students each receive a $3,000 scholarship to support their educational journey as they transition from high school to college. The scholarship is open to students pursuing a four-year undergraduate degree, and its objective is clear: to encourage and empower our students to reach their full potential.
The Class of 2024 marked the second cohort of Founders Scholarship recipients, and we couldn’t be prouder of the students who have been recognized. Their stories are a reflection of the values we hold dear at High Tech High—academic excellence, community service, and a commitment to making a positive impact.
High Tech High North County proudly recognized its Founders Scholarship recipients: Athena Bernheim and Nur Isorena. Both students demonstrated an unwavering commitment to their studies, community involvement, and personal growth.
Athena Bernheim has a deep passion for unusual wildlife, with a particular fondness for cormorants and alligator gar. She is an avid gardener, tending to her plants with the help of composting worms at her home. Athena’s love for reading is evident, with Mikhail Bulgakov’s The Master and Margarita being her favorite book. Looking ahead, Athena aspires to pursue a career in non-profit administration, where she can continue to make a positive impact on her community. Her dedication to both academic and extracurricular activities is truly commendable.
Athena, along with her fellow scholarship recipient Nur Isorena, co-created a prize-winning podcast centered around rainbow trout, filled with clever fish puns. This creative endeavor earned them recognition in the New York Times’ Fifth Annual Podcast Contest, showcasing their ability to combine humor with insightful content. Nur, like
Athena, has a strong interest in the diversity of birds and fish. Nur is also passionate about urbanism and aspires to design trains that contribute to the movement of creating more livable, sustainable cities. In their spare time, Nur enjoys mountain and street biking and finds cooking to be one of the most rewarding hobbies.
The achievements of Athena and Nur are a testament to the well-rounded education and opportunities for personal growth that High Tech High provides. Their ability to balance academic rigor with creative pursuits and community involvement is truly inspiring. We are proud to support them as they take the next steps in their educational journeys.
The success of our students is not limited to High Tech High North County. Across the HTH network, students have achieved remarkable milestones that deserve recognition.
Maximino Carreon, a recent graduate of High Tech High Chula Vista, has begun his studies at UC San Diego, while Alison Holmes is now attending Chapman University. Isabella Cruz, who graduated from High Tech High Mesa, is currently pursuing her education at UC Santa Barbara, and Sabah Wahab has started at UC Riverside. From High Tech High Media Arts, Catalina Jensen is now enrolled at UC Berkeley, and Ian Ridge has joined Isabella at UC Santa Barbara. Jesille Jackson, a graduate of High Tech High International, is attending UCLA, while Jocelyn Lopez has started her studies at Cal Poly Pomona. Finally, Lenner Jaffe and Dezi Taylor, both graduates of Jacobs High Tech High, continue to embody HTH’s design principles of Equity, Personalization, Authentic Work, and Collaborative Design as they embark on their next educational journey.
In the coming months, the HTH Newsletter will be featuring each school’s scholarship winners, allowing us to celebrate their stories and achievements even further. Please stay tuned and join us in honoring the hard work and dedication of our students as they embark on the next chapter of their educational journeys.
Best wishes to all these talented students as they pursue their college and career goals! We are excited to see where their paths will lead and how they will continue to make a positive impact in their communities and beyond.
