The Holy Calves #22321 – High Tech Middle Mesa
High Tech Middle Mesa’s robotics team, The Holy Calves #22321, is off to a strong start in their third season! At the November 17 First Tech Challenge Meet, they competed against primarily high school teams and impressed everyone with their skills, even leading their alliance in multiple matches.
The team has shown significant improvement since last season, and their hard work is paying off. They are deeply thankful for the unwavering support of their families, sponsors, school leadership, robotics coach, and parent mentors. With more competitions on the horizon, the future looks bright for The Holy Calves!
Parent mentor Karen Baldestamon added, “Being a part of the Holy Calves robotics team helps High Tech Middle Mesa students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, foster teamwork and collaboration, encourage creativity and innovation. It also sparks their interest in STEM, builds confidence and perseverance, and demonstrates real-world applications of their skills. It’s a fun and engaging way to prepare them for future success.”
The Holy Cows #1538 – High Tech High San Diego Schools
Representing all High Tech High San Diego campuses, Team 1538 – The Holy Cows are known for their commitment to robotics and community engagement. Meeting on Wednesdays from 4:30–6:30 PM at the High Tech High Mesa Campus (Room 601), this team dives deep into:
The Holy Cows were founded by David Berggren in 2004 at High Tech High in Point Loma, where he was an engineering teacher. Beyond competitions, The Holy Cows are active in the community, participating in events like the G.I.R.L.S. Conference and Battle at the Border, with upcoming involvement in FLL Tournaments. “One of the most rewarding experiences of mentoring students on our robotics team is seeing students grow tremendously over their time on our team, not just in knowledge but also as individuals,” Berggren said. “They often join the team in their freshman year unsure of what they are getting into, a little nervous and with little robotics/STEM knowledge. They graduate from the team with not only much greater STEM knowledge but also 21st-century skills, people skills, life skills, and above all confidence to tackle the next chapters of their lives.”
Students on the team learn skills over multiple years of participation on the team. Berggren added, “Knowledge is passed down from student to student, with veteran students teaching the newer students. Additionally the students are guided by an amazing group of adult mentors, many of which come in from industry and take time out of their busy schedules to share their knowledge and experience with the students.”
High Tech High robotics teams are more than just about competition—they’re about learning, innovating, and building a community passionate about STEM. Whether you’re a seasoned tech enthusiast or a curious beginner, there’s a place for you in one of our robotics teams.
Take the leap and be part of these inspiring teams! 🚀
